New Neighbor Joe, Part 2 “Hey!” a deep voice said, startling me. I was kneeling by one of the in-ground sprinkler heads, working on fixing a small leak. Sweat and mud streaked my arms and legs. I’d probably gotten some on my face, too. I looked over my shoulder and saw the new neighbor about 6 feet away, in only his gym shorts. The first thing I thought was, wow, look at those hairy legs! A big grin spread across his face and he stuck out his hand. “Hey back at you,” I replied. “My name’s Joe. I live across the street. We just moved in.” I grasped his hand and shook it firmly. “Welcome to the neighborhood, Joe,” I answered, pretending that I didn’t know who he was. “I hear you’re also a first responder. What city are you with?” he asked. “Miami-Dade, down in Homestead, close to Everglades National Park. My partner is also stationed there.” I said. “Oh, cool. I’m with Pompano Beach. Nice group. I like it so far. So, yeah, my wife said she heard you guys wer
